Oil in My Vessel
Well, I got oil in my vessel
Keep your lamp trimmed and burning
Got to be ready when that bride groom comes.
Well, I got oil in my vessel,
Keep your lamp trimmed and burning
Gonna be ready when that bride groom comes.
A-mazing grace, how sweet that sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found.
Was blind, but now I see.
Must Jesus bear his cross alone
While all the world goes free?
No there is a cross for everyone,
And there’s a cross for me.
How happy are the saints above
Who once had struggled here,
Surrounded by the ones they love,
The love without the tears.
Bob Carlin invited me to play this song with Joe Thompson, one of the last living Black old-time fiddlers, at a Blues Week at Augusta many years ago. I’ve been carrying it around every since. I contributed the fourth verse to this traditional song.
