Date For Church

cd cover: Jealous of the Moon(Joe Henry/WB Music/True North Music)

I’ve got a date for church tonight. I’m meeting her inside.
So I’m goin’ down to Miller Road, try and catch me a ride.
I’ve got a date in the second pew. And if you don’t see me,
I might be late, might just be watchin’ her from the balcony.

I’ve seen her home so many times.
I’ve seen her up in town.
I’ve seen her slippin’ out the back
When her mother’s shades were down.

I’ve got a date every Wednesday night, but I don’t close my eyes for prayer.
And if I leave before the closing hymn, she’ll never know I was even there. She’ll never know. She’ll never know. (2x)

Scott Ainslie

The slow, R and B changes and shy lover in Joe Henry’s Date for Church have insured it a place in my sets, even though, in our darker moments
on this project, Joe DiGiorgi and I wondered if it isn’t really a stalking song in disguise. I think that — like most things romantic — it either seems really sweet and endearing, or sort of sick, depending on your frame of reference.

Scott Ainslie

Born in Rochester NY in 1952, Scott Ainslie has been playing music on something since he was three years old. A guitarist since 1967 with powerful appreciation for and apprenticeships with elder black and white musicians in different musical traditions, Ainslie carries a portion of them forward in his own traditional blues performances and songwriting.
