Jealous of the Moon

cd cover: Jealous of the Moon(Scott Ainslie/Cattail Music)

I’m not jealous of the sun,
he can shine on you all day long, I don’t care.
Whatever he may see,
it really makes no difference to me.
But at night, when the stars come out
and we lay down so many miles apart:
I hum a different tune, I’m jealous of the moon.

It seems so long ago and so far away.
There are things I know now,
I got no right to say.
So where do I begin? Mostly I live somewhere in between
Something Holy and some kind of sin,
with my regrets over how things might have been.
But when I think of you: I’m jealous of the moon.

And if he charms your eyes, if he rules the tides
What kind of chance do I have?
How’s he keep that dark side away from you?
Someday I’m going to make him jealous, too.

The last set is over and the band is breakin’ down.
Taxi on the corner, the only soul around.
The chairs go up and lights go down.
I slip out the backdoor of this little town
With a street light for company
High up over this empty motel lot tonight;
I saw him, baby, did you? I’m jealous of the moon.

And if he charms your eyes, if he rules the tides
What kind of chance do I have?
I’d like to put some kind of spell on you,
Someday I’m going to make him jealous, too.
Someday I’m going to make him jealous, too.

In my experience, I’ve noticed that most of the time the world shimmies a little bit — as if the circumstances and the content of our lives are out of alignment — so that even though you can hold it in the road and get where you’re going, the tires wear a little funny. But that evening’s events roll around in my memory like a well-oiled Mercedes — as solid and steady as anything going. So I sing about it.
